The Targa Top Rebuild

The Targa Top Rebuild

The Targa Top was in rough shape and needed a complete rebuild. Thank goodness I got a second one for parts when I bought the car.

I started to disassemble the Targa top.

Unfortunately the aluminum panels were gone and complete corroded.

Thank goodness I got another top which had some pieces missing for parts.

It turned out that the panel are in good shape. Also the side frames were in better condition then on the top which came with the car.

Bits and pieces to be cleaned and restored.

The panels after I cleaned them up a bit.

I blasted the frame pieces and rail gutters and powder coated them satin black.

Here is the frame assembled.

Hardware restoration. Here the rear pins. Before:

After:

Test fitting the frame.

Some detail pictures.

More hardware ready to go.

Test fitting again.

The side panels are riveted on to the frame, and the webbing front and rear glued and riveted.

Next is the burlap fabric.

Test fitting again.

Now the foam layer.

Installing the outer skin for the Targa top.

I had some issues with the right side front making some wrinkles.

Here with the headliner installed.

I did some adjusting and this is what it is now. I will leave it for now, an see how if it will change in either direction, when it sits in the sun or get colder. Will do some more adjustments or take it a part again.
